subject description

MA/Postgraduate students are offered to take part in a 4-semester program, which is based on the knowledge about scenography design within the theatre building, but expanded to include the ability to shape the architecture for the performance outside of it as well. The program also aims at expanding the costume design basics. Understanding the course of the design process and the production of the sets, e.g by visiting the backstages and the theatre workshops, will allow the students to realize the complexity of a theatrical production.

Expanding the scenography domain through performing actions in non-theatrical spaces, i.e. the installation of objects, projection of images or distribution of sound will help the students to examine the scope of the perception of the show. Using multimedia forms based on computer animation and film editing will further enrich the show's visual layer.

short subject description

Stage Design course deals with the design principles of scenography in the traditionally understood theatrical space, divided into stage and auditorium. The course also aims at expanding the domain of scenography into performing arts in spaces outside the theatre.

A critical reflection, both on the traditional conventions and on the contemporary theatre practices, allows to find a common denominator for designing scenography – namely the visual narrative.

Stage design, understood as a visual narrative, uses a suggestive set of images creating the play / the performance, but also determines its perception.

Set designers determine what is seen and how it is seen. They are aided in their task by the existing theatrical space, divided into stage and auditorium, or they design their own architecture of the performance.

The spatial relationship between the stage and the audience is one of the means of expression, together with the precisely chosen material structure of the performance, or the colour and intensity of light. The costume completes the whole
